Sunflower Seeds

WholeFood Farmacy

According to research completed in March 2001 by Dr. K. Phillips of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, the sunflower kernel is rich in a number of nutrients that have been shown to protect against cardiovascular and other diseases and to act as antioxidants and anti-carcinogens. When considered in aggregate, this amazing kernel packs a powerful nutritional punch.

Sunflower kernels contain high levels of vitamin E, betaine, phenolic acids, and choline. In addition, the kernel is a good source of arginine and lignans. Each of these compounds, while perhaps unfamiliar to the layperson, has been studied by the scientific community and shown to offer a variety of health benefits.

* Vitamin E (Tocopherols): May protect against cardiovascular disease.
* Betaine : May protect against cardiovascular disease.
* Phenolic acids (chlorogenic acid): Antioxidant and anti-carcinogen.
* Choline : Plays a role in memory and cognitive function.
* Arginine : Potential heart benefits.
* Lignans : May protect against heart disease and some cancers; lowers LDL cholesterol and triglycerides

You can enjoy the taste and health benefits of sunflower seeds in many of your favorite Wholefood Farmacy foods such as Phi Plus, Coco Cherry Phi, Cranberry Phi, Cornaborealis, Corn of Plenty, and ClariPhi.

Judy SmithWe love sunflower seeds at my house. We have eaten them on a very regular basis for years. throw them on a salad toss them into some steamed spinach and I could go on and on. The Cornaborealis sounds like a yummy and nutritius combination!!

SherylJudy,
I am a potato chip eater. I can polish off a whole bag in no time. Since that is really not good for me I did the Cornaborealis. It is munchy and crunchy so, I felt like it soothed some of my chip habit.
It has cut down on the junk fats that most snack food (my loved potato chips) contains. Nuts do have fats (good fats) - your body needs good fats to be healthy.
So, crunch away!!

Lawrencesunflower seeds are tasty. We sprinkle them around for the kids on top of their meals. I would prefer they eat that than chips.

One thing I haven't gotten used to is how some people can eat a couple shelled sunflower seeds and spit out the shells as they sort it out in their mouth. Something just isn't right about that.

SherylHello Lawrence,
I totally understand the part of eating those rather than chips. I will say that potato chips are my big downfall with snacks. If I have chips in the house - I can hear them calling my name to eat them. LOL!

We have went to having the sunflower seed handy so I can get my salt fix. Much healthier and I do not get headaches from the seed like I do chips.

I have even put sunflower seed in my veggie stir fry.

As far as the shell - I knew neighbor kids that could spit the shell a mile and keep the seed. Just something I never really got the hang of. LOL!

Glad to see parents teaching kids that good healthy food can be tasty also.
Have a great day,
Sheryl Loch

JeanetteWe use sunflower seeds on salads sometimes. We used to use pine nuts (pignoli's) and still prefer the taste, but oh my, the price!!! As a snack, we like unpopped gourmet popcorn.
