Ning Communities and RSS

As many of you know I belong to a few online social communities.

The NING sites are one of the easiest to set up as a member. I believe that is why they have become so hugely popular. The fact that anyone can also start their own group for free has also made the site a magnet for all types of business and groups.

The profiles are mostly a cut and past for your ‘About me’ section. Most groups allow you a section to place your website address, banners, and even videos. If you have basic HTML skills then you can have your profile sat up and hot linked in the matter of minutes. Upload a picture of yourself and you can be ready to go.

Here is a neat part for those of you that have a blog with an RSS Feed! About mid page on the left hand side you will find a button that says RSS +. There you simply click the EDIT button, type in the Name of Your Site, and place the link to your blogs RSS Feed. You will also have the option to show post with details or just titles. I prefer to place just titles as the post details are placed in a narrow column and look a bit confusing to me.

This is great because I do not have to worry about informing every one on my list there that I have a new post to my blog. It also gives me a chance to meet new members that are interested in the same topics I am.

If you are having trouble locating your link to your RSS Feed, most can go to your blog, find the RSS button (or hot link), right click on it, now click the word PROPERTIES in the pop up window. This will open a new window with your full RSS link, simply copy and paste in the area of your NING site.
NOTE: If you are not allowed to copy out of the small window you may have to open it full screen. This will also ensure that you get the full link.

Now, you can start getting new readers at your blog with much less trouble.

To see an example of a basic NING profile you are welcome to click HERE. About 1/3 down the page on the left side you will see my Sheryl Loch.com RSS fed blog post titles.

I hope you have a wonderful day,
Sheryl Loch

If you would like a way to put your RSS Feed on other types of profiles, I have instructions how to make and place a RSS Converter.

Very informative and readable Sheryl.

Let me just add: I use FeedBurner which means that not only my blog posts are feeded, but also my Flickr pics.

Hello Judy and Tash,
I am glad that you have found this useful.
This is a great way for people visiting your profile to see a little of your blog. It will help them decide if you may have the same interest and be someone to connect with. It also gives them a chance to pass on your name to others that maybe interested in your blog topics.

In fact in our new forum I am making a blog CoOp section to help connect people with readers and commenters. I hope this new coop will boost everyone's blog by helping each other.

Yes, I have a plan! now, I will just have to figure out how to get people to understand the benefit of how this will help each other.

If you have any questions you are welcome to ask. If I do not know the answer, I will try to find someone that does.
Have a great day,
Sheryl
