Clearing Up a Link Diversity MisConception

I am not an SEO expert. I do try to help people when I can, but I like to have a link to an Expert SEO to back up any ?advice? I give.

I listen to only a few people when it comes to SEO. There are a butt load of people that claim to be experts and they really have no clue what the hell they are talking about, I avoid them.

One of the things that I was recently talking to someone about is Link Diversity. The other person told me I was wrong and I could have went and hunted down an expert to back up my side but, I kinda thought ?Oh screw you?.

Well, lucky me, Rand Fishkin of SEOMoz did a very simple easy to understand White Board Friday about this topic.
This video is only about 4.5 minutes and might clear up some of the mis conceptions people have. Then again you may already fully understand all about this and think it is a waste of time to watch? That?s fine I would love to kick your ass in a market. ;)

Pay special attention to last part about Individual Page Links from a Same Domain.

This video is probably something you do already know. But, I have found that my blog here and our forum is the easiest way for me to keep track of information that I share with others on a regular basis. Things are much easier for me to find if I have it already posted on one of our sites.

Why would they think you are wrong? It just amazes me how many people get Google wrong when they are pretty clear why they rank sites highly. It's nice to see someone authoritative vindicate your point of view.

BillLove Whiteboard Friday. Good resource.

We think link diversity is a best practice. Get links from one end of the spectrum to the other. An unnatural link profile is a red flag, though that doesn't mean a death sentence for the site.

HeinrichThanks for the informative post and video. There are far to many "SEO experts" out there that do not know what they are talking about. Glad that your views were proven.

SireOK Sheryl, tell me I'm not losing my mind. I'm sure I left a comment on this post. Did it get mixed up in the spam filter or am I imagining things. I think I prefer the spam filter.

Sheryl Loch@Ned, It is funny in a way but also sad that so many people have been misinformed. I think that many people have heard that it is not beneficial to get all your links from 1 site & they take that to mean only 1 link per domain. Yet, like is pointed out in the video if a site wants to link to different pages of your site then it is great.

@Bill, I agree that you need all types of links from different domains & site types. Some people tend to only do bookmarking sites, forums, or blogs. When it is much better to have all those types of sites giving you links. ;-)

@Heinrich, I spent far to long getting confused by 'not so expert expert'. I had my head spinning until I just picked a few & found I got results from their advise.
I was proven right...it doesn't always happen that way.

@Sire, I have not seen a comment from you until this one. Then again, I had a reader that could not remember that Sugar was sweet so, I took off the captche & got slammed with HUNDREDS of comments.
Actually, I am not sure what caused it but I was getting comments on every post I have.

SireThat reader could well have been me. I remember entering sweetener as the answer and for a moment could't work out why it was wrong.

KikolaniI think that link diversity is a very important thing to work on, because the whole point to getting in good with Google is having links that look natural. So having all of your incoming links sitting on other site's link exchange page is going to send up a flag to Google that you are participating in unnatural link building and possibly cost your site valuable positioning in SERPs. Whereas if you have a good mixture of dofollow, nofollow, keyword anchored, no keyword anchored, social media, etc. links, it will look genuine.
