How Long Can They Blow Smoke

Yeah, I’m talking about those people that continue to brag how wonderful they are and how much money they make. They are the same ones that get hundreds or thousands of people to follow their every word. Well, that is until people start realizing that it is all a bunch of bull.

Guru Bullshiter

The smoke blowers that I have watched, spend hours telling everyone how much they are there to help. Maybe they brag that they have made a gazillion dollars and want to show everyone how to do it.

Twitter is a great place to do a case study on the fine art of smoke blowing. You will recognize these people because they constantly tell people how many followers they have. Tweets about the amount of comments to their post, or how they have blown up all stat counters with their enormous level of traffic.

I have been watching a few of these people and find that they seldom if ever offer anything of value. Some have one ebook they wrote back at the dawn of time and still talk about it endlessly. Some have blogs that they promote yet, their post do nothing to help anyone but themselves.

Yes, most of these people get the newbies to follow them faithfully for a short while. Once people get a little knowledge on subjects they realize the smoke blower is really just a self absorbed ass that has taken their money and left them with unfulfilled promises.

So, my question is – Would you be able to sell junk to unknowing people just for your own gain?

Do these smoke blowers even know they are not all they think they are?

Thanks Sheryl for the post.

Smoke blowers are everywhere, fake it till you make it is still alive and well. I think this worked well in the old days but question how this works now. As far as having something of value to offer, some of the big guys offer quite a bit of valuable information, but never the whole story it seems. I guess that is ok when they are getting you to pay for the real meat. But even then is the real meat actually enough to succeed?

As far as selling junk, never thought about it but I guess I could if I could get away with it. I just have this thing about looking like an ass. I can do that with out lowering myself to that level.

Not sure if the smoke blowers have any Idea they are transparent. I would venture a guess that it is a 50 / 50 split half knows and plays the fake it till you make it, and the other half really do think they are something.

Just look at this one example how many people in the years of doing this has someone told you they rank at the top of Google. When you ask them to give you the info to do a search they give you, their name, url and or their domain name. Think about it, these people really think that because they they type their specific information a search they own Google. they always say "I'm on the top of Google". I would hope the hell you are.
Don't ever ask them what other words they show up under, had some bad experiences with that one.

Yes there are allot of people that have a limited understanding about the internet, and are blowing smoke because they think they do.

I can see where you are coming from and for the most part I think that you are right. I have gone to seminar after seminar and for the most part the people up on stage say the same thing but tell you that they are the only ones that have that information to share.

On the other hand though- where are you getting your education to now say these people are smole blowers- did you learn anything from them to assist you? Even if it was only what not to do?

I do think that once in a while you come across someone who does share value time after time. You just have to really know what you are looking for.

Hi Jen,
Thank you for stopping in.

I agree that there are lessons to be learned even if it is what not to do! I have been for a ride down that road & did not really enjoy it.

There are some great people out there that do share so much good information with anyone that wants it. I have been lucky to find a few like that & it has been a huge blessing. I understand that they to have goods & services to purchase (they have to pay bills). But they also give you what you pay for rather than give a big sales line and once you pay then you only get 1/2 the package until their next sales letter.

I would have written in more detail here but, have stayed away from naming names. Hate to see people spend their hard earned money for lesson that maybe us that have 'been there, done that' can help them avoid. =)

I wonder if this has anything to do with the field. Marketing is all about promotion so I imagine that you'll find lots of marketers huffing and puffing. On the other hand, in education and/or nonprofits, I haven't seen anyone bragging about their fabulousness. Not yet, anyway!

Hi Sandra,
Glad that you have not frozen your fingers off there in the north.

Most that I see do this are in the field of teaching some type of secrets to marketing or a few are promoting a business.

Maybe the education and non profit promoters figure you are smart enough to see through the smoke. LOL!

If a non profit organization spent all their time telling me how great they were and how much money they made - I might decide they did not need my money! ;)

Great post Sheryl. Smoke blowers are probably always going to be around because they're being bred by other smoke blowers every day. That whole 'fake it till you make it' stuff makes me sick. It's misleading and risks jeopardizing newbies' chances at success. It's self-serving and pathetic. Oh, did I mention I don't care for smoke blowers LOL Sorry, I tried to hold back ;)

Fab post, Sheryl! I wonder why the smoke blowers aren't gagging on their own smoke! Also in this "dumb and dumber" category are the Twits who follow a few thousand, make one or 0 posts and have a shortened URL in their bio. Yes, it's Mr. or Ms. Mystery Meat, aka Inept Marketer. Duh, isn't this "social marketing?"

@Brian,
You hold back? Is that really possible? LOL!
Yeah, those are not the type I normally follow either. I think most of them never really get anywhere. They have to constantly find more new people to baffle. I think that many are being exposed as fakes by others that have been taken in and now are blogging and posting on forums about what happened.

@Renee,
I see those same Twit's and wonder who would even follow them. Maybe the auto follow or they are bot accounts that just fake numbers to make the person look special.
Watch one of these fakes get taken by another fake and they are screaming foul the loudest. Must be karma? LOL!

Let them blow smoke. They are just competing against themselves for traffic, which will eventually get so sophisticated they won't even show up in any results, thus finding their smoke blowing a waste of time. As both search engines and people get more educated about online efficiency, fakers get weeded out.
