When you are out building backlinks whether you are leaving comments on blogs or looking to buy a link spot you need to know if the page you are looking at is still getting cached.
If a page is no longer getting cached then a link there is pretty much useless. Let’s not waste our link building efforts on an old ‘dead’ page, especially if you are buying a link placement.
There is a free toolbar that can give you the cache date of any page with just 2 clicks. Go over and get Aaron Walls SEOBOOK ToolBar. This is one of the handiest toolbars I have on my browser. I have several toolbars installed but, most of them I have turned off unless I need them. The SEObook toolbar is one that I always have on.
Here is the SEOBook Toolbar showing the Page Rank, Domain Links, and Page Links. Yes, the toolbar has much more but, I just want to show you this small section.

To see when a page was last cached you will click on the ARROW right next to the little green Page Rank.
This will give you a dropdown with 2 choices.
Chose GOOGLE CACHE to see the entire page, including the theme with the cache date info at the top or chose GOOGLE TEXT CACHE which will also have the cache date info at the top but, will remove the theme coding and give you a text only view.
Super simple!
Just keep in mind that you want your links on pages that have been cached within the last couple of weeks. The fresher the cache date, the better.
Just because a page was posted months ago does not mean that it will have an old cache date. Some pages that Google still finds very useful will be cached on a regular basis.
Now, don’t waste any time buying or building links on old pages that even Google doesn’t pay attention to.
Once you have placed your link be sure to Ping Your New Backlink.
If you have backlinks on a page that is not being cached regularly, throw a few fresh links at it from a forum, blog, social site…
If the page is on your own site, then update the page with some new fresh info and re-ping it.
If it is on your site you can also post a fresh internal link to it from a new article.
Ok, go get your toolbar and check those cache dates!
I’ll write another post on how I use the Backlink portion of the toolbar to find out where I need more links. ![]()
