Get More From Your Article Title on Blogs

Argh!
What do I title this post?
Yes, that is a problem I face each time I write a new article. Heck, I may spend more time thinking about the ‘perfect’ title then the time it took me to actually write the post.

You may be facing the same issue with some of your blog post titles.
You have the post and now you have to decide if you want a word to be singular or plural, do you write ‘How do You’ or ‘How do I’, maybe you have 2 different words such as Motor or Engines….

You may really like the way one title looks on your page yet, you want a different title to grab the attention of the searcher.

Knowing that most search engines only allows 65 characters for a title and you feel your actual blog post needs more…. Ya gotta do something.

In this instance you can have your cake and eat it.
You can have both titles.

One will appear as the title of the article on your actual post while the other will be the title in your URL.

I suggest you not go crazy with this idea and post the article title and the URL title as 2 totally different things as the search engines may become leery. They have to both be in direct relation to the article.
You do not want to mislead readers or the search engine Goddess (yes, search engine’s are female).

Ok, let me get back to how you are going to accomplish these 2 title task.

In Wordpress you have the box to place your article title.
Right under that you have an EDIT TITLE box. This is where you have the chance to change a word or words.
From my little dealings of Wordpress, you will need to place a – between words in the EDIT TITLE box if you change it from the original given title.

If you use a b2evolution blog script then you will scroll down under the post and place your revised title in the ‘URL TITLE SLUG' box.
You will also need to place a – in between each word.

Once you have done this step and click SAVE (or post), you will see that your title on your blog page is different than the title in your URL.

This is IF you have your blog set to use search friendly URLs.
If you run a wordpress blog script and need to know how to set up your URL’s so they come out in the form of a title rather than just a post number you can see How Do You get Topics and Titles in your Wordpress URL.

If you run a b2evo script and need help getting your URL’s set then just post a comment and I will help you.

I know you have loved this tip so be sure to leave a comment and bookmark this post.
Please ;)

I would just like to add that for wordpress, there is a plugin which you can use to tweak the meta title and description of your post.

BTW, this is my first time to hear about b2evolution. It looks really good.

I don't put much thought on the SEO friendliness of post title. But having explained it here, I'm going to reconsider my approach. Thanks for this info. :-)

Hi Terry,
Glad you stopped in. Thanks for the reminder.
The B2 also has the meta description that I will post about soon. I tend to post as people ask questions & sometimes I get side tracked.

@Walter,
Thanks for coming by.
The one thing to remember about titles - when your page is pulled up in a Search - will the person searching reads it & feel like it is the one they should click on?
Some titles sound exciting but, do they also sound informative?
It's all for the searcher. They are the ones buying. ;)

It's funny how we sometimes think in the same direction. Two posts ago I had the title 'Cleaning Up Our Online Act | FTC’s Advertising Guidelines' and changed the Permalink/URL to just 'ftc-advertising-guidelines' using the WP feature you mentioned wanting just the keywords in there.

Another example, my last post. I changed my first title ‘How The News Can Help Guide Your Niche Sites Part II’ to 'News Related AdSense Site – First Month = One Hundred Dollars' before I published it thinking the later would draw more traffic. A commenter, Klaus from TechPatio, even mentioned the very thing we are talking about.

Titles and subject lines are very important things to concider.

Oh no Brian! We can not think alike!
We could solve all the worlds problems with our brilliant minds and then what would everyone else do? ;)

You never know what will grab someones attention. Or what some people will type into a search. I have seen some crazy key phrases come in. Don't know why they would type that in but, always glad they found me.

Keep thinking like me and you will go far. Not sure in which direction but, far.
