How to Zip a File for Free

I know that many of you may be wondering how to get a document, audio file, or ebook made into a zip file so you can upload it to your site and be able to let your members download.http://sherylloch.com/images/mouseicon/mail.png" alt="Zip File Mouse" title="Zip Mail Mouse" class="rightmargin" />

Here is a simple free program that will do just that!

Zip7 HERE – this program is free and you do not need a registration key.

7 Zip works with Windows 98/ME/NT/2000/XP/Vista

You can go to the site, click to download the program. It only takes a minute to download.
I saved the 32 bit exe file for Windows to my desktop, opened and installed.

How to zip a file.

Now when I have an ebook, audio file, or program that I want Zipped, I find the file,
Right click and when the pop up box opens I mouse to 7-Zip,
from there I Choose Add to “document name.zip”.

This works the same if you have a file on your desktop or in your documents.

Now your file is ready for upload to your site.

Yeah, takes 5 minutes and you have a great way to give a file or ebook to anyone you would like.

Many sites give away these things as an incentive for registering for their email list, posting on their blog, or just because they feel like it.

And yes, many times these files are items that a site may be selling.

I know there are other programs that also do this, 7-Zip just happens to be the one I use.

You can see on the site that 7 Zip does more than just zip up files. It also has a list of the type of files it deals with.

I had someone ask about this earlier and wanted to put up the instructions for others also.

Now happy zipping and giving!

Great tip Sheryl. I use windows vista and it has a zip utility build-in. It's those .rar files that elude me. I have downloaded two programs that open .rar files but one was just a trial and the other didn't work. I guess .rar is another compressed format like .zip files.

Hey Brian,
7 Zip - Site states;
Packing / unpacking: 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR

Unpacking only: RAR, CAB, ISO, ARJ, LZH, CHM, MSI, WIM, Z, CPIO, RPM, DEB and NSIS

So it does unpack RAR files but, does not pack them.

I guess that may be a paid program that will pack them. Truthfully, I have not looked into it but, if I find out - I will let you know.

You are on the top of my list & it's not my shit list. ;)

But, Brad just said the program that he knows that does pack in RAR is paid. He has also found out that packing in TAR is suppose to be just as close to flawless as RAR.

All this Tar & RAR stuff is making think I am turning into an Emo kid.

I hope this helps!
Sheryl - rar - rar (Emo wanna be)
