It’s Not You, It’s Your Domain

No Really, your domain is the problem.

Over the past couple of weeks I have been getting more and more comments that leave a Blogspot URL in the Link section of the comment form. I happen to moderate my comments and always check every new commenter’s link. That has turned into a very scary task. I see that the link they have left leads to a Blogspot blog and I cringe. I also make sure that my stomach is settled, close 1 eye, and prepare to hit ESCAPE!

I bet you know where this is going!

Yes, many of the links lead to sites that are full of ‘body parts’ pictures. I realize that people have those parts but, I really don’t want to see them with my morning coffee. If I had wanted to see those ‘parts’ every day then I would have become a Gynecologist or a Proctologist.

Cait also got slammed on her blog with the same type of comment links so, that sent me on a Twitter bitch fit.

I Tweeted out and stated I was sick of these links and wondered if Blogspot allowed these type of blogs. Apparently they do, they are suppose to be in a private mode but, if you click a direct link then BAM there are ‘parts’ in your face! No warning or asking if you want to see what would be considered an Adult site, you are just directed straight there.

My next tweet asks how to block blogspot links from being accepted in my comments area.
Holy cow ? I had 4 guys right on it! @24lbsofBoost, @24k, @b2evolution, @francoisplanque

After some tweets, I ended up going into my spam filter and setting Blogspot as a spam word. This means that if someone tries to leave a comment and their URL is from Blogspot it gets rejected. Sorry to all of the people that have family friendly blogs there as you will not be able to leave your url in a comment. I figured that this was just the best move to save me problems until Blogspot cleans up their site.

I would suggest that anyone runny a blog on Blogspot get their own domain and hosting. I would not want my site associated with some of the other blogs there.

Last time I had a fit about Blogspot was when you visit a blog there and hit the NEXT button, you can also get pages that have ‘parts’.

So, if you have a domain on blogspot you will NOT be able to leave the link in my comments section. Sorry!

Note to the Blogspot Boys ? Lots of bloggers are having this same problem with the adult sites that you host ? get something fixed! When there are adult sites and kids can just click the link and have no warning you have a problem. Parents (or the government) will want to take more control over the internet (just look at other counties that are trying it).

Ok, my fit is over for the moment. LOL!

Thank you and have a nice day!

Sheryl Loch

It's a shame that a few idiots always ruin it for others but what's one to do? Blogger needs to get active and decide if it's going to be a host of spammers and adult sites or a blogger site.

I started there too [blogger] but, honestly, a domain is about ten bucks a year and hosting can be just a few dollars a month. Anyone that wants to be taken seriously should have an actual site anyway.

I hate Blogger myself, but there's a heck of a lot more people who are legit that may visit your blog from there than the other kind. Of course, I can't tell if this is a Wordpress blog or not, but Askimet always seems to catch the bad blogs so that I don't have to deal with them.

Or maybe I'm just lucky; no, if I were lucky, I'd be able to have a chocolate milkshake every day. lol

@Brian,
I agree that it is only a few that can ruin a good thing. I also agree that most bloggers that want to have a lasting blog should get a domain and hosting.

I know some ladies that have great blogs that are the free Blogspot's, I think they would be better off just moving their blogs.

@Mitch,
People can see my blog they just cannot leave a Blogspot link in the comment section.

I am hoping that as soon as that site gets cleaned up (or I get off the spam list) then I can open it back up.

This blog script is b2evolution and also uses Askimet. But, it was not catching these sites, I'm not sure how it determines a good from bad site in the comments section.

I say Today is your Lucky Day - Go have a milkshake (or some carrot juice). LOL!

Oh, Man Sheryl!! I haven't had that happen luckily, although I have been getting lots of spam on my other blog with crazy words etc on it!! Unfortunate that people do this!!

I tagged you on my blog!

I'm interested to see how this works for you.

I have my own domain; however, I prefer the ease with which my blog is hosted on "that site that shall not be named." If I host it on my own domain, I can't use the layout features and gadgets "that site" has to offer.

Trust me - no "body parts" on my blog. I don't know if you can whitelist it, but it seems a shame to block out such a large site based on a few bad experiences. I haven't run into any of those, but Akismet seems to do a stellar job of blocking spam comments.

I did host my own Wordpress blog for over a year (in addition to hosting my own instance of Blogger there); some idiot loaded a virus there and it wasn't worth reconstructing the blog. I had more problems with spammers and questionable comment content there than I ever have at - that site that shall not be named.

@Onna,
It seems to just be like a huge rush of the garbage. I do wonder if somehow my link got on a scum or spam list.

Hopefully, it is just a phase from some new automated blog spamming tool. I do think that if those links and comments don't get posted then they don't have a way to trace them and send all their 'scum friends'. I get post with crazy words but, it's just my friends that can't spell. LOL!!

@Holly,
Wow, no parts! But, that Dutch Oven Cook Off looked like it might get a little rowdy. LOL!

Since your link does not have the term Blogspot then it is accepted. I don't think that the spam filter has a way to determine a redirect.
Yes, if a scum site put a regular link in then I may once again see "parts" with my coffee.

The free wordpress blogs do seem to have times when several of their blogs get hit with garbage. I know that many places teach their members how to search for places to put links & they include the wordpress domain. Some of the automated tools also include a 'search for keyword on wordpress'. Maybe they think that many of these blogs are not moderated?

That is a concern! My son has a Blogger blog, and we haven't run into anything that we wouldn't want to see, but I'll have to stay vigilant.

@Sandra,
I'm glad that you have not come across any of these sites.
Blogspots terms of service say that any '@dult' sites are to be marked 'private' but, I guess they may just have to many to keep track of. I'm sure as soon as they take 1 down 10 more pop up.

Sheryl, I hate to tell you this, but I think they're targeting YOU. Ironically, my blog has been hosted where it is for over a year now - and within 24 hours of my posting a comment here, I got my first comment spam to an adult site. (Easy enough to nuke and report to Akismet, but I can't fail to see the likely connection.) By the way, said "scum site" did not have the hated domain - it was similar, but it was "thumbl0gger.com" ("o" not zero - I just wanted to evade your filters so you could see it).

That Dutch oven cook-off would've been rowdier if my competition had brought his stuff. What's the Boy Scout motto? Ohhhhh, right: "Be prepared!" Well, he was gracious in conceding defeat. It's the RAIN that got rowdy on us - did you watch the video? LOL - the car horns blaring from the thunder, my daughter and her friend running eight miles in the deluge (I was SO tempted to yell "Run, Forrest, run!" but they were already being called "crazy.") We had a good time, raised lots of money for the American Cancer Society. I'd definitely do it again.

Man I love your post Sheryl. I also get a few people from Blogspot and while I do not mind looking at certain body parts I feel that my readers should not be exposed to it. As I always check my comments I think that I only had to delink the url once as it lead to a sex site of sorts. At least I now know of a solution if I ever come face to face with too more body parts than I can handle.

I believe hosting your blog directly on your very own domain is very important and it does save you from many things. I had bad experience with Blogger as well before and it is even more disturbing when you have small children around you.

I hope the step you decide to take of not allowing a domain on blogspot to leave the link in your comments section works out for you!

I didn't know to watch out for blogspot sites. I have a few regular commenters with that domain, so I don't want to filter them out. But I will go through and make sure no bad ones have slipped in. Thanks!

Too bad for those decent blogspot sites, but I believe there are not so many. It is getting harder each day to protect the blogs from spamming.

Thanks guys!

I am happy to say that I have not gotten anymore comments that lead to sites showing 'parts' since I blocked blogspot.
I do think I got on a scum list somehow and that brought them in by droves.

I am bummed that people using that domain and have real blogs are not allowed to leave their url but, if they do own a domain it will accept that.

I think it is well worth the $9.95 a year to own a domain and start building up links and reputation now if they are in it for the long haul.
