Link Building Search Query

One way to identify blog commenter?s who are just looking to build back links.

I tend to look through the stats in the admin area of my blog about once a day. This not only gives me a chance to see what key phrases I am getting hits from but, also lets me identify post that have been hit by link builders.

By link builders I mean people that really may not want to be part of your blog community but, they just want somewhere to leave their link. Some do seem to actually read the post and make a helpful comment while others just take a few sentences from your post and ad one sentence say something like ?yes, that is great?.

When I look in my ?Search Hits? area of my stats I see all of the key phrases that were typed into a search engine that came to one of my articles.

I always take note when I see something like "leave a comment"+health nutrition

This is a search query that a person has put into Google. When I see the main query is for ?Leave a comment? I know that is all they were looking to do ? build a backlink!

Where you see the + (insert topic here) means they may or may not be in that field and want to get links from like sites. Then again, I get people doing this to totally unrelated crap.

Ok, back on track.

Once I see that someone is coming to my blog post using this method I know to see which post they hit and check out the comment they left. Most of them get deleted because they are just crap. If they do happen to have read the post and left a decent comment I may go ahead and post it but, I give them a NoFollow link, or take their link out.

I know that many bloggers already know to watch out for this but, it seems I have been getting several this week and figured I should make a post as a reminder and to help new bloggers that may not know what to watch out for.

Now, go blog, be happy!!

If you are wanting to find some great blogs to read be sure to watch the Blog Co-Op, I hope to have more members posting links to their great articles soon.

SophiaHey Sheryl,

Thanks for this tidbit. I haven't looked at my blog stats this closely. I will have to take a closer look and be more aware as most of traffic comes from search engines.

SireActually Sheryl, I don't believe anyone, that I know of, has used this method to find my blog, although I have deleted my fair share of crappy comments. having said that, I am quite amused at some of the search terms people use that lead them to my blog. I have to remember to make a list of them as it may lead to an interesting post.

Brian D. HawkinsHi Sheryl, I think you have better blog stats available than WordPress but it's still easy enough to check. I also will record the IP address of repeat offenders and ban them via the cpanel.

SherylHi Sophia,
I'm really glad you stopped in.
Starting out, I had no SEO knowledge and so I always watched stats to see what was coming in from where & how I could improve. Having heard so much about comment spam I found that sometimes looking at my stats was a big give away as to who & why they were here.

After Brians comment here, I am going to have to try & compare the WordPress stats to a B2 to make sure they give the same info.

@CoronadoCookie, I watched comments because I did not want to have 'bad neighbor' links. I also got slammed with their garbage for a while because I had let some slip through & then they must have called all their spam friends to come post.

You know, me & Barb are just stats freaks. LOL!

@Sire, These guys that search this way, get to your blog & are afraid of you. No way are they gonna post - you might hunt them down. LOL!

Funny, looking at some of the search phrases that come in & I wonder how & why they are here. Then I really wonder, WHO would type some of that stuff in. LOL!

@Brian, I need to go see if WP has a demo that will show me the stats. I assumed, that WP had the same or better stats than the B2evo.

I did get a new search today that you will be seeing link:http://www.commentluv.com... "health"
It may not be much of a bother - putting it in Google it does bring up some blogs that list Comment Luv as Enabled but, it also brings up random post that just talk about it. So glad to see an innovative person is at least trying. ;)

ShirleyThanks for leaving this link at my blog. This is definitely a good tip. And now that I've looked at my own stats, I do see people finding me by using the "leave a reply" phrase...

It's a shame how many people use this method to build links, and they openly exploit it... But if I get a valuable comment, I typically don't mind.

SherylHi Shirley,
Your right that if someone actually leaves a valuable comment then that is fine. There are some people that may search for places to comment this way but, really do want to be an asset while they build there links.
