Profile Linkers Piss Me Off

For some reason people have started again with profile marketing to build backlinks.

This is where they join every forum they find just because they can put a link to their site in during registration. They have no intention of actually posting anything relevant. If they do happen to post, it is only if they can put in a link to their sales page.

Look people, most of those profile links are not worth shit. Yes, some may show up in Yahoo backlinks for awhile but, they are pretty much worthless. They end up falling off the face of the earth.

Many of those profiles never even get cached by Google.

If you are not posting content somewhere on the site then the bots will not have a link to even POSSIBLY ever find your profile.

If you are posting shit content then, you are likely going to get deleted by mods or admin.

More and more forum owners are cleaning house and getting rid of the trash. The ones I have talked to are deleting members that do not have X amount of post, no proper intro…
We owners have worked to hard to let idiots ruin our sites.
Our forums were built to share information, when you visit…remember it is our house.
I love my dogs and I do NOT let them shit in my house and neither will you!

So what are you doing? You are wasting everyone’s time (even your own).

Do you have that much time to waste?
I would think you could spend that time wisely and actually do something that others will appreciate and will build your reputation as an intelligent person rather than just a worthless name on a membership page.

Some people would say that forums are dead...I think they are still very useful if we can stop the abuse.

More links is NOT always better.
Think Before You Link!

Brian D. HawkinsSpam is spam is spam. They are all low lives. I just found one in my comments today. Forums are harder to keep up with. You and Brad are doing a great job. I gave up years ago. I was spending all of my time cleaning out spammer accounts.

It even hurts the rest of us. Last month I registered for a site, set up my profile. I went to log in the next day only to find a message that my account was suspended due to spam. I don't blame the site owner, it's the spammers that are hurting everyone.

TamOh I couldn't have said it any better! I wish more forum places would follow suit. I joined a group called BlogCatalog, made some great friends but now getting a lot of junk, spam and now spam email I believe came from there. Wish they would clean it up. Glad to have found your site....

Sheryl@Brian, I know you had your time as a forum owner & can understand how hard it is. Most don't build a board just so others can abuse it.
Geesh, I guess I have hung around with you, Sire, & Mitch to long...I'm starting to rant. LOL!

@Tam, Nice to see you! Blog Catalog is going down hill fast. We have a thread in the Marketing section of the Guild about Blog Catalog. It was a very calm rant. ;)

SophiaSheryl,

I LOVE your post! I couldn't have said it any better. I wished more forum owners took the time to pay attention to their forums and clean up the crap.

Thank goodness for extra eyes (moderators) to keep the crap where it belong...off our forums.

SireEven though my forum isn't all that busy, it's barely breathing ;), I go through it regularly to delete people that have never posted anything.

I don't think they're dead, you just have to find the right ones.

DwippyLink Wheels are "in" again huh? I hate link wheels they take way too much time and energy.

Maybe they were never out but I can't keep track of whatever thing is the hot think in link getting this week.

Sheryl@Sophia, I know you have the same problem over at your forum. I am sure you & Shelly have your days of yelling as you delete the junk. LOL!

@Sire
, That's the thing, many people don't care if a board is busy...they just want somewhere to put a link (even if it is useless).

@Dwippy, They don't seem to be doing Link Wheels as they have all their links going to their home page. Well, at least the ones I keep seeing. It maybe that on other boards or types of sites they are linking to their sub properties.

Chris PineI wasn't really aware this was a problem. I guess that's a benefit of not being a forum moderator, eh?

But this makes me respect and appreciate the mods. It must be a tough job. I have a few forums I like to post at, and I would be sad if they died due to spam. Forums aren't dead!
