Site Recovery, Crash and Burn or Just a Scraped Knee?

If you have ever had a site go down you know the first thought in your mind is that of Crash and Burn! You have the feeling that all of your hard work will be gone forever and it might be unless you have done a little work.

We just had 3 of our blogs crash this week. No warning just – POOF and they were gone! The crash only affected the blogs on the server that were running the latest script update, blogs running the older script were fine. So, I want to write you this reminder that it can happen and most likely will at some point in your sites life.

First thoughts might be, what the hell happened and why?

After that your mind starts racing as to where all your post might be.
Do I have a recent back up?

Do I have copies of my post?

Hell, what post do I even have?

Back ups people! Yes, back up’s can save your life, or your site which leads to less stress, lower blood pressure, and in turn leading to longer life.

Heck, we just had a discussion about this a few weeks ago in the Marketing Topics Lost Site with No Back Up. One might think I would know better.

My last site back up happened to be only a short time ago and only 2 post were lost (also several comments). 1 of the post I had in a word document from where I originally wrote it (I have a doc’s folder just for blog post). The 2nd blog post I had just written on the fly that day and had NOTHING saved. No biggy it was just a post about getting new glasses so, I could redo it basically like it was. If it had been anything that I had researched I would have been in deep poop!

My blog, minus the recent comments, was back in no time and then I made a fresh back up from the CPanel.

Caitlinn’s main blog was not so lucky. Here last back up was a while back and she just lost some American Idol post that were bringing in great organic searches for her.

Here is where the big G was a great help. You can do this also IF you post complete post and do not use teasers.

Here is how Cait got back all of her post –

She went to Google

1. Typed in – site:gamegirlracing.com (Yes, use your own sites url)
This will bring up all the pages of your site that are indexed by Google.
If you hit the links they take you nowhere!

2. Click on the text under the listing that says CACHED.

3. Now you can copy the post and be able to repost it on your blog.

You will loose the bolding and highlighting…. If you have pictures and are not sure of the url… You can do a VIEW PAGE SOURCE from your browser tool bar. If you copy the article from the View Page Source, be sure you are only taking the article and not the entire skin…

This method only helps if your page has been Cached by Google.

Like I mentioned if you use Teaser’s on your blog then you will not find the complete article cached. You will only find the teaser and that is a real bummer!

Even if you rename the post the exact same your previous perma link to the article may be broken. So, recheck any place you have left the link and edit if you can. I use perma links in forums so, I go back and double check or replace if needed.

Take away tips –
Back Up Your Site at least once a week!
Keep a copy of your post in a documents folder!

Our host has set up an automatic back up system for our blogs, it emails a back up to us each day. We will keep at least a weeks worth before deleting. Our other blog that ‘blew up’ did have this back up system installed but, we didn’t get emails with them. It did save the blog because we could go in though the CPanel and recover but, if the server itself ever dies then we would not be able to have those back ups so, get the system to email them to you.

Now leave a nice comment or useful tip and then go make yourself a back up of all your sites!! You might want to be super nice and remind all of your friends to do a back up.
