Skype 4.1 for Windows is Out in Beta

Skype has released version 4.1.0 on May 27, 2009.

They state that is much improved from the last update of skype 4.0. Boy, I hope so because that version sucked! It would constantly crash, it would log you out at random times, and it did not always flash when you got a new message (instead it put a little number over the skype button in your lower tool bar). The print was very small and hard to read along with a whole list of improvements that were not helpful at all.

Guess you have figured out that I ended up going back to an older version of 3.8.

Ok, the Newest Skype (for Windows) will allow screen sharing. It does not allow all parties to edit the screen but, they can all see it. To share your screen with others you will see a Share button and have the option to show your full screen or just a selected part. This is on a per contact bases, if you share your screen it is only seen by the person you have selected. If you are in a group chat, I would not use the sharing just because I do not trust the feature to be perfect yet (it is in Beta).

Version 4.1 also has a larger screen for video chat and is also used for the screen sharing.

Screen sharing and video does have lag time for some (if not most). Try to remember that if your contact is on a slower connection then I would avoid both of these options.

You can now import contacts from your Gmail and Linkdin. Of course if your contacts in these places do not have skype or have used a different email to sign up for skype then you may not find them using this method.

You can download the new Skype 4.1 if you dare. I know they need people to try it out and find the bugs but, if you are not willing to deal with problems then I suggest you wait a while before changing to the new version Skype 4.1 Download

You can find the version 4.0 Here
If you want the 3.8, which in my opinion is still the best you will click the link and scroll down the page to the next to last sentence near the bottom where it says Previous Version of Skype This should be the 3.8 (if they haven’t changed it since I posted this).

There now you are up to date on your Skype news. Well, at least you now know what I know (or think). LOL!

For setting up Skype 3.8 you may want to see
Skype How To Questions These are some of the questions I received from readers after they read 3 part Skype Set Up Tutorial

I do hope all of this helps get you started with Skype for Communicating for free online.

Nikki MavenThank you Sheryl

I'm currently using the Skype 4.0 and like you, I'm not a big fan. I think I'll wait to upgrade and may even follow your advice and go back to 3.8.

Love that we can count on you for an honest opinion.

SherylHi Nikki,
I think sometimes these programs have to have a big mess up version so they can then find out what doesn't work. I just hope that they do make the improvements rather than feel they have the market cornered and we just have to accept any ol crap they develop.

I love trying out new programs or beta versions, just as long as I can get the old 'tried & true' back if need be. LOL!
