Stop Do Not Hit That Share Button

That’s right just hold on!

You know I am a fan of sharing great site links. No matter what site you like to use (Digg, FriendFeed, Twitter…) sharing links is good! That is why I wrote about the Shareaholic Firefox Add On a while back, to make sharing super easy.

Ok, why I do not want you to share your great find just yet?

So, you just read a great article and know that it is your duty to share it with your network. Let’s just think a minute before you do that.

You know that once you Stumble, Digg, Tweet….that your friends will be coming over to read it. Not only your friends but, if it’s good, your friends are also going to be linking it to their FaceBook, Myspace…. Yes, that means just by you clicking to share 1 post possibly thousands will be receiving the link and going to take a look for themselves.

How can you possibly use this to increase your traffic?

Easy, you thought the post was useful, it is a topic that you know about, why not add a comment? If you take a few minutes to write an intelligent comment to the post, then as others come and read through, you have a chance of being noticed.

Is this a sure fire way to get tons of traffic?

Probably not tons but, if you do not post a comment then I can guarantee that you will get NONE!

At least with having a comment posted you have a chance. You are not only getting yourself a backlink (if allowed) but, your name and your intelligent comment in front of all those that pass by.

Think about it – do you ever just click on a link that someone sent, read through the post, and the comments?

I do and I also find that if someone has written a comment that strikes me I then follow to their site and may get lost in blog post and comments for hours. Just from clicking 1 link I may end up on 50 different blogs, it’s like a blog post and comment train.

Yes, this sounds way to simple and it only takes a few extra minutes to add that comment but, the improved chance for traffic is worth it.

Soon after I finished this I realized there will be a question that I know will be ask. I might as well get it out of the way.

What if the blog is set to moderated comments?

In that case you have 2 choices –

1. You post your comment and wait for a bit until it is approved before you share the link.

OR

2. You post your comment, share the link knowing that many bloggers post comments ASAP and that a shared link will most likely be sent out by several people over a period of time. You may not get your comment seen by the wave of readers you send but, it will be there for the next set.

Please give this post a share!

Great tip Sheryl, and I'm taking your advice. Now if someone follows the Digg http://digg.com/business_finance/Stop_Do_Not_Hit_That_Share_Button I just posted they can see my comment too :)

Hi Brian,
I love to do the Stumble when I am looking for new things and one day thought - DUH - I can also leave comments. If I am reading them so are other people.
I can be a bit slow somedays but, I am catching up.
Thanks for stopping by and the Digg!
I will be back over to your blog for some more deep thought!

Ok... I got to admit.

This was a "well duh" moment for me too.

Social Bookmarking and leaving comments on well written sites/blogs/articles is a great way to get targeted traffic.

Great post Sheryl. I love to comment as its the courteous thing to do when someones made the effort to make a good post that you either totally agree or disagree with. I do try to comment before reading other peoples opinions though, otherwise I sometimes find myself being slightly swayed by the comments of others.
"Must have own opinion" he say's in a Spiderman stylie :)

Karen,
You are allowed a "well duh" moment once in awhile. Truth is - it is normally you saying something and me having the "DUH".

I do allot of commenting on blogs and now since I bookmark many, I may as well get the most out of it! LOL!

Thanks for stopping in Phil! The Spiderman style kinda fits you. Will we see a Spidie mankini soon? ;)

I should not read all the comments before I write mine. That would keep me from getting confused. Wish I would have though of that.

Leaving comments is a great way to build backlinks and also show others that you are a real person.

Since I have been doing the comment then bookmark - I have seen an increase in traffic. It takes time but, it does work.

I've always thought it was a good move to share the post you commented on. If it's good enough to merit a comment, it is also good enough to share. Plus, if your network of friends see your name constantly popping up on the articles you bookmark, it gives them more credibility - no one will wonder if you were just bookmark exchanging at random with the sites you share.

Kristi,
Since it only takes a few minutes to leave a good comment, I may as well do that before I hit the bookmark.

I think it gives the blog author a bit of content and a bookmark link (2 votes from me). I feel I can do that for them if they have taken the time to share their knowledge with me. Yes, I do get to have a bit of that back since I have my name there also.
