When was a Site Last Updated

Today I have a super short tip to find how recently a site was updated.

I find that many times when I am looking for information online, I get led to a page that may have the info I need but, if it is not in a blog or forum format, it may not have a post date or you may not even know if the site is even updated anymore.

Here is an easy way to find out.

While you have the page open,
Clear the address bar,
Now place this simple code into the address bar and hit Enter. javascript:alert(document.lastModified)

A small pop up box will open in the center of your screen with the last time the site was updated.

Now, you can decide if you are looking at super old worn out info. If so you may want to continue searching for a more recently updated site.

To bad that there are no simple codes to put into the address bar that will tell you if the info is right or not. LOL!

EDIT- This code is no longer working to find out when a site was last updated. As of right now, I have not found a sure fire way to check for this. I will keep my eyes open and if I figure it out, I'll be sure to add it here ASAP.

Ok, super simple and fast today!

Brian D. HawkinsWow, that has to be one of the coolest secrets around. I have never seen that before. If I needed to check something like that before I would have clicked the 'Age' button (Wayback Machine) on the seoquake Firefox plugin. Then I would need to compare old and new pages. That's a lot of work when I can be looking at an actual update time is seconds using your tip. Thanks for sharing.

SherylHey Brian,
It is kinda a pain to remember the code but, I have a document with all of that little stuff on it & have it labeled well. I just pop it open - even that is likely to be faster than your method. I would be lost. LOL!

I just get so mad when I think I have found an answer to my question & then realize the info on the page is years old & no longer applies!

With all of the sites you have - you need to save as much time as possible. ;)

jajasFor those people who haven't realised, the below code does not work.
javascript:alert(document.lastModified)

What the above code give you is the time and date the website was last refreshed and when something new was added to the website. In other words to know when the website was last updated you need to look at the bottom of the page if it is displayed.

RyskI thought there were other methods to find out the date of the page or when the page was updated?
Derived from Google cache or something like that?
